Our oral hygienist who are university graduates are devoted to the prevention of oral disease and the promotion and improvement of your oral health as well as overall health. The correct functioning and optimum health of the mouth is vital for overall health and wellbeing.
This is why they aim to provide hands-on educational and clinical services to all patients treated at the practice in order to create awareness of oral disease and to ultimately motivate and equip you to maintain optimum oral health.
Our hygienists also take an interest in furthering education to keep abreast with any advancements and changes in technology in order to provide you with the best and updated professional services.
Procedures performed by our hygienists include:
Oral hygiene instructions using state of the art digital education programme; Scale and polish plaque and bleeding index/score; Perioscreening measurement of gingival pockets; Deep cleaning use of local anaesthetic (administered by the hygienist);
Fluoride applications for prevention of decay; Desensitizing applications sensitivity of root necks; Digital x-rays; Impressions for biteplates and bleaching trays; Bleaching
Our hygienist practice under prescription of the periodontal surgeon, Dr Hans Van Heerden and liaise with him at monthly meetings regarding patient maintenance or any issues at hand.
During treatment the hygienist will assess the patients oral health status by doing a plaque and gingival index at every recall visit. The interval period between recall visits will depend greatly on the patients ability to maintain an optimum oral health status. If any abnormalities are detected during these recall visits the hygienist will refer the patient to the periodontist for further examination.
